Breasts

Now that I have your attention.

Some of you who read my blog have received this via mail, and a huge thank you to those who've given so far. But the power of the internet is far reaching, and I always say, I only use my powers for good. LOL

You might have noticed the new look; there is a method to my madness.

This year, I'll be participating in a very special event called the Breast Cancer 3-Day.

My interest in helping to fight cancer began when I was a pharmacy student, and did much of my training at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. It was an invaluable education, interacting daily with men, women, and children---from all walks of life, fighting an illness that insidiously tries to take over your body, and spirit. It was solidified by watching two dear colleagues, women in the prime of their lives and careers, diagnosed with breast cancer. One was younger than I. Both are well today, and I pray the odds continue to be with them.

But not all are so lucky. According to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, of approximately 200,000 American women diagnosed with breast cancer this year, nearly 40,000 will die from the disease. The 3-Day is a chance for me to do something bold about breast cancer. I'll walk 60 miles over the course of three days with thousands of other women and men. The net proceeds will support breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment through the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. If you've never read Susan Komen's story, I urge you to, it's on the website.

I need your help. I've agreed to raise at least $2,200 in donations, but I've set my personal goal at $5000. This blog has received over 4000 hits since last fall. Can you imagine if everyone who reads this page can give $50? $25? I could reach that goal in a week.

Make the journey with me, virtually. Making a donation for my trek is easy, simply follow the link to my page at the 3-Day. If you prefer, there is a downloadable form that you may print and mail in with a check. (Make sure you designate it to me!)

All donations can be made anonymously if so desired.

The ribbon in my header will serve as a link to that page, as will there be one on my sidebar until the event.

Please, forward my link to family and friends who support finding a cure for this disease. No one is immune.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post through, and in advance for your generosity.

You should have named your post BOOBIES. Hee.

I'm happy for ya chica. You know how much I love organizations that help a cause, and help the people that raise the funds at the same time. My bro's girlfriend's mom is a survivor and they are both very involved in breast cancer awareness here in the bay area. I'll be rooting for you girl!! How I wish I could fly out there to cheer you on!

As someone who used to work at the national headquarters of the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation - I'd like to tell you all that the law requires a business labeling itself "non-profit" keep its operating budget under 25% of its annual income-- and the Komen Foundation is usually around 9-12%. That means 88-91% of your money goes DIRECTLY to mission. Komen's mission is "to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease through the advancement of research, education, screening, and treatment."

Send your money to Giovanna! One in eight women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. The two biggest risk factors are being a woman and getting older. Breast cancer is treatable. Help get mammograms to women who can't afford them. Help educate women who don't know. Help stop breast cancer from taking someone's sister, someone's mother, someone's wife, someone's friend.
