Sunday tunes

Music Monday would have sounded cooler but I didn't want to wait until Monday to post it.

I heard some treats on my commute in this morning. One was actually, *gasp* a U2 cover. Now, I know what you're thinking. "How could and why on Earth would cover a U2 song?" But I was completely won over by Irish folk icon Luka Bloom's beautiful acoustic rendition of "Bad". There was almost a reverent feeling to the way he sang Bono's lyrics; he caressed them with a sweet, simple tenor voice. You can sample it here by forwarding through the first three tracks.

Morning Edition Sunday had an interview with Ben Vaughn. You may not have heard of him, but you've most likely heard his original composition work on "3rd Rock from the Sun" and "That 70's Show" (Though there is much more to the man's career than that.) Anyway, he was promoting his latest project, "Designs in Music"---described as "a vibrant snapshot of instrumental music's past, present and future." From his bio:

"Despite the lure of Hollywood, each weekend Ben would leave the studio lot behind and travel to his Mojave Desert home. Driving late at night, he would tune in Palm Springs easy listening station KWXY and let the music run through him. Soon the arrangements of Percy Faith, Paul Mauriat and Henry Mancini became a natural part of his blood stream. Over time it became obvious to him what his next recording project had to be: a modern instrumental album combining the magic of those late night broadcasts with everything he had learned through the years as a TV composer, record producer and recording artist. "

This is not your typical "elevator music". Listening to it play behind the interview, I was just taken away to another time. It sounded like it should have come right out of a QT soundtrack or film noir. The track they feature on the link don't even do it justice. If you are a serious musicphile and appreciate a melding of genres I highly rec you at least check out the interview.

Common Breast Cancer Myths

The first myth pertaining to this disease is that it only affects women.

Second myth that is associated with this disease is that if one has found a lump during an examination, it is cancer.

Third is that it is solely hereditary

The next myth associated with breast cancer is downright ridiculous. Would you believe, that in this day and age, some individuals still think that breast cancer is contagious?

Conversely, some individuals foolishly believe that breast size determines whether or not one gets cancer.

Finally, another myth that is associated with this disease is that it only affects older people. This is not so. Although the chance of getting breast cancer increases with age, women as young as 18 have been diagnosed with the disease.
